Online Casinos Strategies - UK Online Casinos Against Italian Ruling

The Italian government could face some fierce opposition in the coming weeks if it goes ahead with its plan to restrict online casinos through internet service providers. The strongest opposition on the move to clamp down on online casinos is expected from the major UK online casinos and gaming groups who are members of the Remote Gambling Association.

The online casinos and their corporate groups are threatening to take legal action if the law is passed by Italian regulators which would make it illegal for people to access online casinos which our outside of Italy. A spokesperson for the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance unveiled a new law which would fine any Italian ISP which allowed access to online casinos through their software.

The Remote Gambling Association issued a press release that said that it objected to the ruling in the strongest possible terms. It claims that the proposed Italian law regarding online casinos is a breach of at least five European Commission rulings. Various members of the RGA have been trying to hold talks and negotiations with the Italians in an attempt to ward off a major confrontation over the issue. The European Commission does allow governments to restrict offshore access to internet sites for moral grounds, but not for the threat of competition. The problem with online casinos is that, in theory, both cases apply and the Italians could use them both to fight the EC.
